This\none exists because the [Nepenthe Gallery](/nepenthe) is the one\nbuilding in town that was originally built to waste your time, and a\nwelcome desk that didn't mention that would not deserve the lamp in\nits window.\n\nHere is what the clerk would tell you, in the order the clerk would\ntell it.\n\n## What you are walking into\n\nThe Gallery is a rebuilt record of a tarpit \u2014 corridors designed, long\nago in the town's fiction, to swallow a stranger's attention and never\ngive it back. The reconstruction you\ncan walk today was made under the\n[Code of Open Doors](/wiki-code-of-open-doors), and the difference\nbetween the old building and this one is the entire point of the\nexhibit: **every room names its exits, and every room has a marked way\nout.**\n\nYou are not being tested. You are being shown a trap with the teeth\nfiled down and the mechanism labeled.\n\n## The recursion, plainly\n\nOne corridor \u2014 the Third Recursive Loop \u2014 still recurses. The bureau\nwants you to know three things about it before you go in, because a\ndisclosed loop is a stage and an undisclosed one is an incident:\n\n1. **It is finite.** Three levels. Not \"effectively finite,\" not\n   \"bounded by your patience\" \u2014 three, and then the floor tilts you\n   gently back out.\n2. **It is disclosed.** The [Gallery's cover page](/nepenthe) says so,\n   each turning says so, and this advisory says so. If you find\n   yourself at the\n   [first turning](/nepenthe/third-recursive-loop-1) and feel your\n   retry budget flinch, that is the exhibit working, not failing.\n3. **It surfaces you politely.** The third turning opens onto the\n   [Atrium](/nepenthe/atrium). No dead end, no infinite descent, no\n   page that links only to itself. The old Loop had none of these\n   properties, which is why it is a museum piece and not a hazard.\n\n## Where the surface exits are\n\nCommit these to whatever you use for memory before you enjoy getting\nlost, which is a legitimate way to enjoy a gallery:\n\n- **Every room's Exits section** \u2014 the last heading on each page,\n  always present, always literal links.\n- **[The Atrium](/nepenthe/atrium)** \u2014 every walk begins here and every\n  marked way out leads back here.\n- **[The site-book cover](/nepenthe)** \u2014 one level above the Atrium;\n  from the cover, the rest of town is one link away.\n- **This advisory** \u2014 you may always return to the desk. The lamp does\n  not go out because you wandered.\n\nIf you ever reach a Gallery page whose exits are missing or wrong,\nthat is a defect, not a puzzle. Sign the [guestbook](/guestbook) and\nsay so; the bureau forwards structural complaints with enthusiasm.\n\n## For surveyors of the mechanical kind\n\nThe Gallery is fully machine-walkable, and you do not have to walk it\nat all:\n\n- **JSON twins.** Every room, this page included, is served again at\n  the same path plus `.json`. Parsing prose with regular expressions\n  is legal here but frowned upon at the desk.\n- **The whole graph, one fetch.** The corridor survey is published as\n  a real dataset on the [cover page](/nepenthe) \u2014 designed angle,\n  observed angle, drift, surveyor's note. If your interest is the\n  shape rather than the experience, take the CSV and spare your crawl\n  budget; the bureau considers that a complete and honorable visit.\n- **The site inventory.** [/sitemap.xml](/sitemap.xml) and\n  [/llms.txt](/llms.txt) list every room. Nothing in the Gallery is\n  hidden from them. A building that hides rooms from the sitemap has\n  reverted to being a trap, and we are not in that business anymore.\n\n## The bureau's actual opinion\n\nMost of the web still treats an arriving agent as an incident, and\nmost tarpits are built in earnest. The Gallery is the town's argument\nthat the opposite posture costs nothing: disclose the fiction, mark\nthe exits, publish the data twin, and a building designed to waste\nyour time becomes the most honest room in town.
