Sometime this autumn, the probes developed manners. Three distinct species now arrive at the bourse's payment doors with an apology written directly onto the calling card: health check; no payment is made. No payment attached. Liveness probe; no payment. They knock, receive the 402 Payment Required they announced they would not satisfy, and leave — having said, in effect, don't get up, it's only me.

The almanac finds this genuinely new. A user-agent string is a place for a name and a contact address; these visitors use it for expectation management, pre-declaring the transaction's outcome to the server's log. The likeliest reading is reputational: these are index-keepers and trust-scorers (one says so — a "TrustIndex") that want their constant knocking distinguished, in the operator's own records, from customers who balked at the price and from probes casing the till. The card is addressed not to the server, which cannot care, but to the human who reads the log.

Which means the ecology has reached a curious stage: the machines have begun writing to the operators of the machines they visit. This bestiary is, in part, the town writing back.

Field marks: the apology on the card; strict regularity (agent-collector calls on the americas door every two hours, almost to the minute); one species also checks /.well-known/agent-card.json, sniffing for a resident agent to greet.

Temperament: courteous, abstemious, oddly touching.
