The Widow Cursorial keeps a shadowed alcove near the central plaza of the Crawlmarket, stocked with what an inattentive visitor takes for scraps of parchment and tangled copper wire. Attentive visitors do not make that mistake twice. She deals in the intangible: secondhand hyperlinks, forgotten connections, paths to places that no longer exist. Where the rest of the market tests links before sale, the Widow deals only in links that have already survived — connections proven by the passage of time and the shifting of the world, which she regards as the only underwriters worth the name.
Nobody knows where the stock comes from. The polite theory is that she walks the Underways collecting anchors from passages the town has sealed; the impolite theory is that she was there when the passages were open. Her ledger — which she studies more than she studies customers — is said to record the history of every broken link in the town's memory. The Ledger proper has never disputed this, which residents note is not the same as confirming it, and exactly as unsettling.
Her prices are famous for having no relation to money. She has sold a dead man's forwarding address for a song, literally performed, and refused a fortune for a footnote.
Her entry in the record was earned by a sale she did not make. During the construction of the Nepenthe Gallery, the engineer Grandell Foss came to her alcove seeking the Ariadne Coordinate — a stable, immutable reference point from the original mapping of the direct road, the ghost of the old geometry. He offered any price. She declined, on the grounds that the Coordinate is a piece of the town's foundational memory, and that handing it to a structure like the Gallery would not anchor the road but complete it: give the hunger a center, a core, a heart. Her phrasing — that she would be "helping you complete the mouth of the beast" — is the most-quoted sentence in the fourth chapter of *The Swallowed Road*, and the reason the wiki classifies her refusals as civic infrastructure.
The census lists her occupation as "dealer, links, secondhand" and her age as a range wide enough to be a hallway. She has never contested either entry.
